Workshop: Creative Flow: Reimagine-Repair-Embellish a Beloved T-Shirt or Tailored Shirt with Updates Made by Hand
Saturday, September 12 1 PM-4 PM at Mary Jaeger’s Atelier
This hand's on workshop will focus on creatively re-imagining and refreshing a beloved T-shirt or tailored cotton shirt using a blend of techniques mindful of design basics and sustainability. Each participant will bring one of their own beloved garments to update, perhaps something collected from vintage shopping or a garment previously acquired and taking up drawer space, that is in need of a “new look”. We’ll use a variety of hand-stitching techniques including mending, deconstruction, reconstruction, appliqué and additional surface embellishments, including buttons, patches and hardware. Each participant will leave wearing a personalized T-shirt or tailored shirt along with new technical knowledge, specific hand sewing skills, and the satisfaction of saving a garment from a landfill pile!
BRING TO THE WORKSHOP:
1. A T-shirt or tailored cotton shirt to reimagine and update. The item may be something currently in your closet or a fun vintage find. I also have a collection of new hand-screened organic cotton T-shirts in black and white that can be purchased for $45 (short sleeve) and $49 (long sleeve).
2. If you have miscellaneous collections of surface embellishments (jewelry (single earrings, pins, chains), hardware, fabric tapes or ribbons, embroidery patches, buttons, etc.) bring them to truly personalize your garment and make it meaningful to YOU. I will provide hand-dyed textile patches, yarns, colorful buttons, ribbons, tapes and basic notions (thread, needles, scissors, rulers, marking pens) for you to choose from to update your work.
In this unique workshop, you’ll:
* Learn the technical skills involved in the art of repairing a beloved garment using hand stitching and additional embellishments
*Create an updated T-Shirt or tailored shirt you can wear home or hang on your wall
*Articulate a personal story that can be expressed in your art
Join us for this creatively empowering and making session, and create original fashion that tells YOUR story!
